Message from AAUW of Utah President

Teri Jewell

Dear Members and Friends of AAUW-Utah,

Welcome to AAUW of Utah. AAUW was started in 1881 when a few women supported one another to pursue higher education. It was thought at the time that if women got a college degree, they would lose their ability to have children! From those beginnings, AAUW has been the organization that has nurtured, supported and advocated for women’s rights, pay equity and education. AAUW of Utah was organized in 1917 and today we have two branches – one in the Salt Lake County area and a second branch in St. George. Each year, in collaboration with other women’s organizations, we attend meetings and lobby the legislature for laws that affect women, girls and education. Each spring we honor women who have made a contribution to women’s rights in Utah. And, every other year for more than 40 years we celebrate women artists through an exhibition that is open to the public. Each year, we raise money for college scholarships, and we have worked to introduce girls to STEM – science, technology, engineering and math.

We have book clubs and social opportunities to get acquainted and enjoy one another’s company. Check the rest of the website for meeting times and opportunities to get acquainted. We would love to get to know you and have you get to know us.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I would love to work with you to become an AAUW member.
